Marc Elliot Wednesday Feb 17, 2010 :: Campus Speakers I
Marc Elliot recently graduated from Washington University in St. Louis. His college experience resembled that of many others: he participated actively in his fraternity, played intramural sports, studied abroad, and completed all of the pre-med requirements. None of those things was particularly extraordinary—except for this fact: he did them with Tourette’s syndrome and only four feet of intestines.
Two days after Marc was born, he was diagnosed with a rare birth defect called Hirschsprung’s disease. His doctors discovered that he had no working large intestine and barely any small intestines. After seven experimental surgeries and four years of being in and out of St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Marc survived his ailments, leaving him with a strong heart and unbreakable will. However, his medical challenges did not end there. By the age of nine, Marc was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome (TS), a neurological disorder that causes him to make involuntary motor and vocal tics.
In dealing with his personal challenges, Marc has gained uncommon insight into the power of perseverance as well as the importance of understanding other people’s differences. In addition, he has learned the value of humor and its necessity in our daily lives. These insights have given him an incredible opportunity to inspire and teach his peers and adults alike.

Steve Caouette Wednesday Feb 17, 2010 :: Mainstage II
Combining impressions, improv, sound effects and classic stand-up comedy, Steve Caouette pushes the ‘comedic envelope.’ An amazing impressionist, Steve can create a perfect reproduction of a celebrity then bring that celeb into our everyday life, from the late Robert Stack, host of Unsolved Mysteries as a “love machine,” to Arnold Schwarzenegger being pummeled by his girlfriend, the “Predator.” Not only does Steve do impressions, he bombards you with sound effects and improv, continually involving the audience. His sound effects whisk you away to a babbling brook, a fireworks display, a lightning storm, or to the sea depths in a submarine. He personalizes every show to keep it unique, fresh, and memorable. Steve’s many talents have been seen in numerous commercials, performances in Las Vegas, shows at colleges across the country, and in the recent independent feature film, ‘Tough Hombre.’ A little wacky, a tad zany, and a whole lot hilarious, Steve Caouette will leave you in stitches.

Lloyd Dobler Effect Thursday Feb 18, 2010 :: Mainstage III
The Lloyd Dobler Effect has been around for more than 8 years, having toured over forty states and thirteen countries. The band has an impressive list of accomplishments: winners of the 99.1 WHFS Big Break Contest that pitted LDE against hundreds of area rock bands and led to several main stage appearances at the HFStival; headlining multiple international Armed Forces Entertainment tours; and being voted one of the top ten best bands in the DC area in a Washington Post reader’s poll. LDE has amassed a solid and growing fan base and they love their fans.
The name for the group comes from the main character in the 1989 movie “Say Anything” starring John Cusack, where Lloyd Dobler held a large boombox over his head outside of his girlfriend’s window and blasted “In Your Eyes” to prove how much he loved her. This image soon became an iconic symbol of romance by an entire generation of women who expect similar expressions of love from their mates. The LDE name was primarily adopted because the band thought it sounded cool; and it does.

The Sarah Mac Band established their musical collective out of long existing friendships - friendships which are amazingly unique and span generations. Dan Dyer Thursday Feb 18, 2010 :: Special Event Showcase
Discovering his musical voice in his late teens, Dan Dyer quickly rose to prominence in Austin, TX during the late 90s with the much-heralded band Breedlove. After touring with Breedlove, Dyer found his way into commercial songwriting, with songs placed in marketing campaigns for Budweiser, Chevrolet, Dr. Pepper, and Campbell's Soup. Dyer ended up heading north and getting a bit of a "New York education", where he collaborated with veteran rock legend Lenny Kravitz, who produced and released Dyer's first solo album in 2005, ...Of What Lies Beneath, on Kravitz's Reprise imprint label Roxie Records. After a year of touring behind the album, Dyer took a season to winter from performing - living in St. Louis, raising a family, and continuing to write commercial tunes.
Dyer's soul-revivalist live performance draws from a wealth of influences, including Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, and Bill Withers, bringing with him a lengthy catalog of songs, many recorded, but still unreleased. After seasons spent in New Orleans and the South, and gathering inspiration from greats like Dr. John, Dyer has taken on a voodoo-centric stage persona. The audience is treated to a special brand of commotion as Dyer switches from piano to guitar, sometimes performing with a boyish grin, and other times with a perspiring concentration. Dan Dyer's voice and performance intensity are raw and hot, yet soulful and sensitive, drawing in fans from all walks of life.

He’s studied at New York’s Juillard School of Music, won the U.S. Air Force’s Wide Talent Search competition, and his fiddle- laden remix of Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech has contributed to regular invitations to perform throughout the country at special events.

Strong, hopeful and charismatic, Stacey Lannert doesn't just speak about overcoming childhood sexual abuse. She connects with her audience. Viewers feel her pain and, most importantly, her triumph. Stacey was recently released from prison where she served 18 years for fatally shooting the man who raped her from ages 8 through 18. That man was her father. Stacey never lost her ability to love life and learn from it even though she was sentenced to life without parole. The governor granted her clemency in 2009, and within 6 days, she walked out of the prison gates. Stacey had been granted her physical freedom; it was the ultimate act of forgiveness.

Stacey has also appeared on Nancy Grace, 20/20, Larry King Live, Montel Williams and many other programs. Dave Matthews Tribute Band Friday Feb 19, 2010 :: Coffeehouse I
Their name says it all: The Dave Matthews Tribute Band. Many go to their live shows with reservations, high expectations, and the burning question, "Do these guys sound like the real Dave Matthews Band?" Almost always the answer is, "Yes!"
As Rick Grant of Entertaining U in Jacksonville, FL wrote, "The Dave Matthews Tribute Band turned out to exceed its billing as a quality improvisational band that uses Dave Matthews material as themes to improvise. Clearly, this distinguishes themfrom the other so-called tribute bands. The band is exceptionally tight and produces a solid groove over which the players improvise with hot chops."
Hailing from Chattanooga, TN, the Dave Matthews Tribute Band is the only nationally touring tribute to the Dave Matthews Band. This 5-piece ensemble strives to pay homage to their famous counterparts by matching the excitement, energy, intensity and intimacy of a DMB live show.

Flip Schultz Friday Feb 19, 2010 :: Mainstage V
Since the wee age of 8, Flip Schultz knew he wanted to be a stand-up comedian. It was at this age that he won a talent show for doing stand-up and beating the more "popular" kids who did singing and dancing routines...how clichČ! For a while, Flip performed wherever he could find an audience, whether at a family get together or at one of the many bar-mitzvahs he attended as a youngster. Finally, at the age of 18, Flip braved a "real" comedy stage (which doubled as a bar) and won the open mic contest. For the next two years Flip kissed ass, annoyed club owners and got stage time as much as possible. (while still attending school for his degree) It paid off when Flip started to make money...both he and his parents were very happy about that one. Receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Florida Atlantic University, Flip also managed to graduate cum laude . . . to the surprise of both him AND his parents! Currently Flip can be seen headlining colleges, comedy clubs, and corporate events across the country. His credits include: Semi Finalist for NBC's "Last Comic Standing 4", Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham", CBS' "Star Search", HBO, Latino Laugh Festival, and many others.

Live Band Karaoke Saturday Feb 20, 2010 :: Mainstage VII
Live Band Karaoke. The name says it all. Karaoke with a LIVE BAND. Combining the silly fun of karaoke with the energy of a live rock band. Live Band Karaoke allows anyone to fulfill their rock and roll fantasy.
Singing is only half the fun! Watching others performing their unique renditions of rock's greatest songs also contribute to the hilarity. Some singers really belt out the tunes, while others make up for a lack of singing ability with rowdy stage presence. Either way, the irony and humor work on many levels as the band rocks out the songs true to the original recording. Band members can also contribute as back up vocalists and help out with forgotten lyrics.

Matt Martino Saturday Feb 20, 2010 :: Mainstage VII
Those of you who already know Matt Martino from his days in the Windy City are familiar with his catchy, groove-oriented pop. For those of you who are just discovering Mr. Martino, you've found him at the right time. After arriving in Nashville and soaking up the city’s influence, Martino’s work has become a well polished, retro/pop sound, thick with musical layers and lyrical depth. His writing is delicate and poignant; he has a knack for capturing the most subtle human emotions as well as beautifully simplifying the most complex ones. More prevalent now are signs of maturity in Martino's playing and writing. His songs don’t get old; new secrets hidden within each tune are uncovered with every listen. His skills as an arranger, engineer and producer come through on his debut CD “Let it Shine”, which was created entirely by Martino in his own Porter Avenue Studios.
The sound itself is big; a powerful but always heartfelt homage to pop classicism. The messages behind the songs are big as well and always relatable. While the songs are well crafted, Martino is never afraid to flex his muscle as a player, making his live shows dynamic and exciting events. Always surrounded by amazing players, Martino's confident Rhodes piano sets the tone and the other musicians follow suit. The result is something that's catching on quickly.

When he first set foot on this country, he was dyslexic, awkward, and didn't know a lick of English. Today, he is an author who has published "life changing" books and audio programs, while being beloved by many as a charismatic speaker and award-winning marketer.
Originally from the Philippines, John Obedoza is known as your "Ultimate 'D.C.' (Destiny Choosing) Motivator". He got this moniker not only because he grew up near the high crime area of Southeast Washington DC, where he experienced his share of trials and tribulations, but through his company OBECorp (short for "Out-of-the-Box Empowerment Inc.") John has emerged and empowered thousands to become their own "Destiny Choosers" no matter what their situation is. His talks, products, and Internet videos, all incorporate an "out of the box" and innovative delivery style that he has truly become known for. In fact, his "R.A.P." YouTube video was recognized by renowned marketer Bill Glazer as one of the Internet's most "outrageous" creative advertising videos.

Lenny Tumbarello Saturday Feb 20, 2010 :: Campus Speakers III
For several decades Lenny has been intrigued how and why so many people live their life in debt up to their eyeballs. Over time he’s discovered two things. One – True financial success is simply the result of consistently applying a few obviously simple, basic principles, that others ignore, in an effort to achieve the endeavor. Two – We don’t talk about the topic in public. It’s taboo. As a matter of fact, it’s the most UN-talked about topic in America today. Because it’s not talked about, so many believe the half-truths they see and hear in the media. It isn’t generally a course we took in school like reading, writing and arithmetic. Yet this money thing is used in our everyday life and determines the life experience we’ll live. Lenny is passionate opening this discussion through heartfelt, understandable stories. He inspires audiences with practical solutions, hope and encouragement.

From MTV to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, her socially charged brand of Alternative Soul music speaks universal truths about issues many artists shy away from - poverty, war, race. While moments opening in 20,000 seat arenas for the likes of Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, Sean Paul and Maroon 5 are impressive to most, this singer-songwriter is perhaps most proud of her mission to change lives. As an award-winning public speaker (APCA 2007 "Best Diversity Event", APCA 2005 “Best Solo Artist” Finalist, APCA 2004 “Best Solo Artist”) and founder of the Global Institute for Diversity and Change, her multicultural and leadership lectures are bridging the gap between racial tolerance, cultural understanding and social justice on college campuses across America. Snakes Alive! by Tom Kessenich :: Roving Showcase
My name is Tom Kessenich, I am a native Wisconsin Herpetologist. I have been involved with reptiles for over 35 years presenting programs to various organizations including schools, civic special interest groups and colleges and universities and have spent countless hours in the field both researching and admiring reptiles.
I was Head zookeeper at the renowned Serpent Safari Reptile Zoo and I also maintain a private collection. I love animals and feel each one has a purpose. Reptiles are a very misunderstood group in the animal kingdom. Snakes, in particular, instill fear in most people. However, public attitudes are slowly changing. People are beginning to see snakes not only as fascinating, but also as important and valuable. The fear of snakes is learned behavior and has been exaggerated by such things as misrepresentation and myths.
My goals are to help educate the public and provide services so man and animal can live in harmony. Reptiles are a good indicator on the condition of the environment. When the environment is no longer suitable for them, it will no longer be suitable for us; for all parts of nature are interconnected.
